  • Afghanistan: is it safe?

Just curious -- has anyone here traveled to Afghanistan since 9/11? I'd love to know what it's like there. Did you feel safe? Is there a lot of anti-American/anti-Western feeling among the people there? Can Americans even enter the country?

    Re: Afghanistan: is it safe?

I went to Pakistan in 2004, and I was completely at ease.

I did make it a point to register with the U.S. Embassy when I got there, and I stayed with people I knew and trusted. I didn't go off by myself, and I didn't go in to parts of the city that might be considered dicey (even for residents).

All in all it was a delightful experience, and I was treated so warmly and with such hospitality; I can't say enough about how great the Pakistani people were.

I'm guessing Afghanistan would be similar, although it would depend on the purpose of your travel and who you were with. There's a difference between being a tourist and dressing like the locals, staying with them--and then being there in the military in uniform, representing outside interests.

Thanks so much for the info -- that's very interesting. Were you there solely for pleasure?

Yes, I went for my brother-in-law's wedding. My husband is a Pakistani immigrant (now a citizen). It was a wonderful experience. I can't wait to go back.

Hi there, well, I haven't been there. But based on what CNN reports, it's like suicide attacks are like a daily and unfortunate occurence there. But yes, Americans can still enter there but it will be really unsafe.

            Re: Afghanistan: is it safe?

The U.S. government issued a travel warning for Afghanistan on February 6, 2008. If you want to go to Afghanistan as a tourist, I would suggest waiting until conditions improve. According to this warning, Americans in Afghanistan are under threat of kidnapping and assassination. I hope that any Americans who are considering traveling to this country will pick another destination.

They're pretty strict with Americans getting in there. By the way, why the hell do you want to there anyway? All you'll see are dusts and war remains.
