  • Best Areas to stay in Los Angeles and Las Vegas

    Hello fellow travellers

A group of us are heading to the US from Australia in September and we intend spending 5 days in Los Angeles and 4 days in Las Vegas. Our plan is to hire cars and get around in cars. There is a mountain of information on the net about particular hotels etc. What I would like to know is where is the best area to stay in each city (near the airport, downtown etc). We will be unabashed tourists so the considerations are
    - from what locations will the various tourist sites in the cities be most accessible?
    - where is safe?
    - what area has resturants etc close by for night life purposes?

    Tks

    Las Vegas.

    2 main tourist areas

    - The Strip
    - Downtown

All the 'action' is on the Strip. All those major hotels that you see in photos of vegas are on the Strip. Many of the big time shows are there too, same goes for restaurants.

Downtown is the 'original' Las vegas (sort of). Mostly older hotels; and some would say, cheaper.

Hotel prices vary depending on the:

    - day of week
    - season.

Headed to Las Vegas on a Thursday - Sunday, you will pay more per night than a Sunday - Thursday stay. Many hotels show a monthly chart with their pricing. I've stayed at a variety of hotels over the years where the rate for a nice place is $59 on Sunday night, but $429 the following Friday. I kid you not. Check out the sister travel board of this website, it's called www.tripadvisor.com Be prepared to pull up a chair (for hours) and read and read. Real people report on everything you need to know.

    www.frommers.com
    www.fodors.com
www.lonelyplanet.com all have lots of useful info.
Also, check out various newspapers and travel magazines for info. All you have to do is type the city into the search engine.

The above sites work for L.A. also.

    Los Angeles

... is a big sprawling metro area. While you can cab/bus it in Las vegas, don't even think of this in L.A. Even with a car, travel takes time.

-Downtown L.A. - not much doing
-Hollywood area - plenty to keep you occupied
-Anaheim (Disney area) - cheap hotels
-Beach areas (where I usually stay when I go on business) is to me, the most fun due to the relaxed atmosphere.

Beach towns: Santa Monica, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Newport beach and Huntington beach to name a few.

From downtown and Hollywood, you can take the subway (tube) to Universal Studios.

Anaheim is about 50 minutes south and east of the LA airport.
Beach areas are north and south of the airport.

Check out the travel sites mentioned above. for lots of useful info. Have more questions, you can post here, and or on www.tripadvisor.

Your best bet in Los Angeles is to stay in Santa Monica. This area is safe, there is a lot of walking and public transportation. From here you need to take other transportation to the major sites but you will be happy with the LA experience if you can find accommodations in Santa Monica.

Hey Look for an Embassy Suites between Hollywood and Anaheim. If you're planning to go to San Diego also pick Orange County then you'll be in the middle of everything...Good Luck!!!!

There is a plethora of Los Angeles Hotels to chose from. My favorite spot would be Santa Monica. There is so much to do and see. Great restaurants, Great Bars, Great time. Oh, and the people watching is incredible!

When traveling to Las Vegas I typically stay at the Venetian. Large, luxurious rooms, and well located on the Strip. Lots of deals are available now with the depressed economy.

When traveling to Vegas, make sure to stay at hotels near the strip. They are very convenient especially when going out to the bars at night and just visiting other hotels and casinos.

They have their advantages, but I don't know that I would go so far as saying 'be sure to stay' in a strip hotel. It depends on your budget and what you're looking for in your trip. Downtown or off-strip hotels can have a lot to offer - particularly when it comes to savings.

Here are some areas of L.A. that one might consider visiting.

                    Everything L.A.

Each of the destinations highlighted in the article above are small enough enclaves that you wouldn't need a car if you don't mind walking. You could use an LAX shuttle to get to whichever one is your style and then walk (or occasional taxi) from there.

Vegas is a city in the Mojave Desert where there is not a true four seasons. The summer is three plus months over 100, we jsut hit 44 days. It is wide open with people living here and visiting from around the world. The COL is high because almost everything has to be "trucked" in. Locals learn to limit gamble, like an evening at the movies, so night life is generally like any other city for locals. Otherwise visitors enjoy the night life of a city 24/7 and the associated costs, eg clubs.

People who live here work all three shifts so sometimes you never see, meet or even talk to your neighbor. It is a regular city away from the tourist areas with malls, churches, schools, etc.
