Default rail travel in US with cat

I need some help. Does anyone know if it is possible to travel by train with a cat? The people who answer the phone for Amtrak say it is not but I am wondering if there is some way that it can be done.

Welcome to our message boards, Max's Momma!

Unfortunately, the answer you received on the phone is correct. Amtrak allows trained service animals and states on their Web site: We permit no other animals onboard at any time.

    Sorry.

I'm really sad to hear that because I love train travel and now that I am retired, we were planning on a lot of it, but we can't leave the cat for that long. (I know that sounds dumb but he was a "rescue" and we feel mankind owes him a lot.)

It doesn't sound dumb at all and I completely understand your point. (My sister has rescued 3 dogs within the past year so "pet travel" is an issue that comes up quite a bit in my family!)

You might want to check out the Humane Society's website for additional information about pet travel. They are a wonderful resource for everything pet-friendly -- from hotels, to beaches, to (believe it or not) bars and restaurants.

Their main website is http://www.hsus.org. I typed in the words PET TRAVEL in their search box and found some other useful articles. There was one specifically about train travel that you might want to read. It mentions that while Amtrak doesn't allow pets, there may be some smaller rail cos. in the US that do. Here's a quick link:

    http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/ca..._or_train.html

Hope this info is useful and that you find some pet-safe travel alternatives. Please keep us posted!
