You're right -- no matter what, you will look like a tourist.

So the most important thing is for you to be comfortable. I wore jeans a lot when I was traveling around all of those countries. (I was about 20 years old at the time. Maybe I was able to get away with looking like a sloppy student?

)
It certainly wouldn't hurt to step it up to khakis or something a little nicer than jeans, as long as you're still comfortable. You'll fit in a little better and probably give a nicer first impression as well. I'd definitely try to avoid wearing those T-shirts with big old writing on them (like an "I heart New York" T-shirt or whatever), because those scream American. Try to go for solid colors.
