I think it would be great to do something like this but with small kids we take vacations suited for them. So for now and the foreseeable future, no but when they're older...sure!
I have had the privilege of completing 14 volunteer vacations and I will mostly travel in this way in the future. Once you have had the in-depth experience that they can offer and realize the fun of staying put for a period of time in order to really connect, you will be hooked. As I tell my students and clients, volunteer vacations can be addicting!

I have done one (in Biloxi, MS, helping with post-hurricane rebuilding) and would definitely love to do it again -- preferably somewhere abroad. I'd like to combine maybe a week of volunteering with an extra few days exploring/sightseeing.
