Cheap hostels in berlin

Hi this year I was thinking about going to berlin and do it the cheap way, so staying in jugendherberge (hostels) is probably the rhing. I've searched quite a lot of them on the net, but didn't seem to find any that were how I imagined them (meaning i can't afford that much money spend just on a place to sleep in). So I thought you guys could help me? Does anyone know a cheap (really cheap) hostel/motel/etc in berlin. It doesn't have to be glamorous just a bed and a bathroom.

I was once booked into a pension in the former "east" Berlin on the Alexanderstrasse and it was very clean, had comfy rooms and the toilet & shower were equally as clean right across the hall. My french friends had chosen this location. I do NOT remember the name but it was a walkup and we were on the fifth floor, it really was immaculate. I ended up NOT staying there, but that was because of things that had happened prior to our arrival in Berlin, on other destination stops. By the time we'd gotten to Berlin, I needed a REAL hotel room, with a big bed, en suite toilet/shower, room service and TV!! I was near tears by the time I left the pension with all the stress that led up to arriving in Berlin.

That said, I would highly recommend this Pension on the Alexanderstrasse. I may have written it down in my travel journal, I'm not sure. I have to look and see if I can find it for you because I am sure they are still there as this was an ideal place and it was priced very, very well. I think it was like 25 Euros a night or something. There was a payphone downstairs in the event you needed to make a call whilst in Berlin.

I'm hoping that if you run a google search for Pensions/Alexanderstrasse/Berlin that it might turn up!! It'd be a shame to not be able to find this place....I'll try on my end to get the name......here's hoping!!

If even a hostel is too expensive, what about trying CouchSurfing.com -- ie sleeping on a local's couch? I'm pretty sure it's free.

I have not yet found the travel journal with that Berlin Pension in it, but I just did a VAST google search and have not come up with it. Also, I think I was wrong and that it was NOT on the Alexanderstrasse but on the Alexanderplatz, because the Park (Alexanderplatz) was directly across the street from the Pension.

I am determined. I will find this place, and I am sorry I have my travel journals all mixed up with so many trips in many different books. I will sort it out and find the book that has that Pension in it and post back. It is a great Pension and a great price.

Didn't know about the CouchSurfing.com! You learn something new everyday!! Sounds like that might work out for a lot of people!!
