ST. Lucia All-Inclusive Vs. Carnival Cruise

Am looking at altwernatives for Easter school break with friends. Either we do a cruise that captures most of South Carribbean (incl. St. Lucia) or we do an Air Jamaica all-inclusive to St. Lucia. With the prices about the same the only difference seems to be whether we want to experience a number of islands briefly or deeply explore one. We've been on a cruise of this nature but our house guests have not. We loved St. Lucia (much for the same reasons quoted by Debbie the host) and would welcome the opportunity to explore it further. However, the packages are for all-inclusive resorts and we like to meet the locals - is that possible with a package?
Also - any recommended locations that are not so touristy as to prohibit enjoying the stay.

DCRiz, we were all-inclusive and still went all over. Also, both in the Castries area and in the Gros Islet area, they had Friday night street parties that were a cab ride away. The all-inclusives most all have nice snorkeling trips, and we found that hiring a driver was great. You can do that for several hours on a day or two and still not miss a meal at your resort-most will be glad to do a boxed lunch, too.
