I do keep a journal on just about any major trip (I don't for a quick weekend away, usually). It's part of my evening ritual to curl up in a chair or bed and write about all the highlights of the day.
As above- the highlights, and any special meals.....from my last cruise I noted one night that it was 4 quail's eggs on pate, on a wafer base, followed by Gressingham duck and courgette chips. Now I can immediately sum up the flavour of that meal. I also noted that the comedian that night was corny, but funny!
Some things are handy to remember....my first trip to Ephesus says that I shouldn't have attempted this without something to cover me against the fierce sun....there's no shade whatsoever. The next time, I took an umbrella....as it was February, I was snowed on......![]()

When my wife (Gennie) and I retired in 2000, we took our first guide tour.
As we had never done it before and had not seriously researched what people did, we went with the flow.
After a week, we could not remember what we had done on the first portion of the trip.
When we got home, our friends asked us for details and with the exception of the most exciting events, we could not specifically detail.
We decided to begin keeping a journal of each day of our next trip.
Then our friends asked us to send them an email with the journal included.
Then they asked for pictures, soon for videos, GPS tracks, etc.
Our emails were huge and difficult to send.
Our son came to the rescue by writing the code for our personal web pages.
We now have 62 Trips with Journals, etc. for every day of those trips.
The negative of this endeavor is that we have to do our work every night.
Gennie takes notes during the day and then types.
I do the pictures, videos, and GPS tracks.
We cannot miss a day as we then forget the details.

I keep a journal for major trips, especially if I have had a guided tour of some sight. I try to remember what I learned on the tour and write it down so that I will retain it better. The simple act of writing it helps me remember even if I don't go back and read what has been written. It also helps me later if I decide to create any sort of album with my photos.
