Default Poll of the Week: Booking Hotels in Advance

Do you prefer to book all your hotels before you ever leave for a trip, or would you rather leave your nights open for more flexibility? Vote in our poll!

I prefer to pre-book my hotels. I research where I am going enough that I know the area I want to stay in; then I serach for the hotel I think will work best. This may be because I know what I want to do and see or it may be because I like the security of knowing where I am going--especially as I get older! Anyway it has worked for me for quite a while.

Ideally, I'd like to know where I'll be sleeping and situated like most travelers. It has generally worked out well when, as mentioned, I've put in the research by checking here w/fellow travelers, trusted guide books etc.
Other times, I've had trips that were a bit of a mash up; part visit w/friends, part hotel (so they'd help locally with a choice) and yes, I've actually arrived into a few destinations with no reservation but mostly off-season & indeed it worked out, whether it was my guide, the railway magazine or the tourism office in a railway station.
Always have your first few nights booked, even if you DO feel like winging it a little....getting set is crucial!

I agree completely with Host Ciao! I like to research my hotels rather than show up and hope for the best. And not having a place to sleep makes me feel antsy...

That said, I do occasionally leave nights open on road trips if I'm not sure how far I'll get during the day.

I'm with Soliteyah on this one...unless it's a Bank holiday, then there's usually room in one of the cheap and clean chains when you're on the road. If we have set dates, then we book on line as soon as we've decided where we're going. We've already booked our favourite hotel and parking in Southampton for our next cruise, which is months away.
