Where would be the best for a weekend getaway? Just my husband and I - no kids. We will be going towards the end of September.

La Crosse, Neenah, or OshKosh?

Sorry I can't give you a specific reply about any of those towns though I have heard of them. You might try a Google search for them or for attractions in the towns. That would be a start. Did you consider one of the resorts at the Dells--not one with a water park where there might be a weekend with lots of kids. But there are others there that should work for adults on a getaway.

I would like to suggest Door County just northeast of GreenBay. We have vacationed there for years. The end of September will be less touristy. Check for hotels in places such as Fish Creek, Ehpraim and Sister Bay. Great restaurants, shops, bike trails, golf courses etc.. You won't be disappointed.
