Extraordinary Efforts Producing Extraordinary Results in Bermuda HAMILTON, BERMUDA, Sept. 11, 2003 9:00 pm ADT – Bermuda steadily continues its cleanup and recovery efforts in the wake of last week’s Hurricane Fabian. Bermuda has been able to quickly get back on its feet – a testament to Bermuda’s infrastructure and strong building codes and the strength and resourcefulness of its residents. Power restoration continues with power being restored in almost all areas of the island. Work to repair The Causeway continues. The Causeway is open to one-way traffic from between the hours of 7:00 am and 7:30 pm. Repair work to The Causeway continues to be conducted during the night time hours. Visitors should allow for extra travel time as the causeway does get congested with morning and evening rush hour traffic. Expect delays traveling to and from the Bermuda International airport as a result. We appreciate your understanding as restoration work continues. Repairs to the Bermuda International Airport continue. The airport continues to be open to private and commercial air traffic. The runway lights have been repaired. However, night flights to the island will not resume until repair work to The Causeway is complete. The flights affected by this include: AA 1443 Bermuda - New York (JFK) - cancelled AA 1444 New York – Bermuda – cancelled BA 2232 Bermuda – London (Gatwick) – time change – Dep: 6:00pm Arr: 4:40am (next day) BA 2233 London (Gatwick) – Bermuda – time change – Dep: 12:15pm Arr: 3:45pm (same day) Due to damage in the Departure lounge at the Bermuda International airport US Customs & Immigration Pre-Clearance remains closed and is currently taking place in the United States. Flights out of New York’s LaGuardia and Washington DC’s Reagan National Airport are cancelled until further notice. The flights affected by this include: US Airways US 235 Bermuda – Washington (Reagan) US Airways US 981 Washington (Reagan) – Bermuda US Airways US 1015 Bermuda – New York (LaGuardia) US Airways US 950 New York (LaGuardia) – Bermuda All other flights to the Bermuda International Airport have resumed their normal flight schedules. Visitors are still encouraged to contact their airlines to confirm departure times. Visitors to the island may experience some delays in getting to and from the airport. Air Canada, American Airlines, Continental, Delta and US Airways have instituted flexible cancellation policies as a result of Hurricane Fabian. For more information on these policies please contact the airlines directly or visit their web sites. Several of the island’s hotels and guesthouses have reported damage. Currently the following hotels that have reported damaged and are temporarily closed. Reopening dates are estimates and are subject to revisions: Ariel Sands – Expected reopening September 22, 2003 Blue Horizons – Will reopen as soon as power is restored The Fairmont Southampton – Expected to reopen November 1, 2003. Hamiltonian Hotel – Awaiting damage assessment and completion of any needed repairs Horizons – Expected reopening September 20, 2003 Marley Beach Club – Awaiting damage assessment and completion of any needed repairs Mid Ocean Club – Expected reopening September 19, 2003 Sonesta Beach Resort – Expected reopening May 1, 2004 Pink Beach Club – Expected reopening March 15, 2004. The following properties have reported that they have sustained some damage and are open, but are not currently accepting new reservation. Fairmont Hamilton Princess – Accepting reservations for dates after September 22 The following properties have reported they have sustained some damage, have electricity, remain open, and are currently accepting reservations: Clearview Suites, Dawkins Manor, Edgehill Manor and Little Pomander have had its power restored and are open for business. The Reefs was erroneously reported as not accepting reservations in an earlier release. We regret the error and apologize for any confusion. Royal Palms Hotel Rosemont Soundview Wharf Executive Suites The following properties have no damage, no electricity, but are open and accepting reservations. Granaway Greenbank Guest House Salt Kettle Sandpiper Valley Cottages Vienna Guest Apartments The following properties have reported that they have sustained some damage are currently without electricity, but remain open and are accepting reservations: Astwood Cove Fordham Hall Garden House Grape Bay Cottage La Casa Del Masa Those parties with questions on their accommodations at Bermuda hotels and guest properties should contact the properties directly. Bermuda will open its port facilities to cruise ships on Monday, September 15th. Each of the cruise lines serving Bermuda have been notified of Bermuda's ability to accommodate their ships and it is up to the discretion of each line to determine if their ships will assume their normal itinerary. We strongly recommend that cruise passengers check with their cruise line to confirm future sailing dates and itineraries. The local bus and ferry service continues to operate on a limited basis. An assessment of the island’s world-class golf courses indicates that most of the courses sustained little or no damage. However, several clubs have opted to remain closed until clean-up is completed. Currently, Belmont Hills Golf Club, Mid Ocean Club, Tucker’s Point Golf Club, Riddles Bay Golf & Country Club, Port Royal Golf Course and St. George’s Golf Club are all closed, with re-openings starting as early as Sept. 13. The following sites and attractions are open for visitors. It is recommended that visitors check the hours of operation to avoid any disappointment: Bermuda Aquarium and Zoo, Bermuda Perfumery, Bermuda National Gallery, Bermuda Biological Station, Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute (BUEI), Dolphin Quest, Maritime Museum, and Visitors Service Bureau in St. George’s. The following sites and attractions have reported some damage and are currently closed: Gibbs Hill Lighthouse, The Carriage Museum, Botanical Gardens, The Arboretum, Fort St. Catherine, St. David’s Lighthouse, Bermuda Society of the Arts and Spicelands Riding Center Bermuda’s renowned restaurants are open for business. A comprehensive list of restaurants and their hours of operation are listed on the Bermuda Department of Tourism’s website. Special upcoming events such as Jazz Festival and the Bermuda Culinary Arts Festival are currently under review and decisions will be made no later than Tuesday of next week. Here is the latest list of cancelled and rescheduled events. The Bermuda Grand Prix & Conyers, Dill, & Pearman Classic Criterium scheduled for September 18 – 21 is cancelled. St. George’s Market Night on September 16th is cancelled. Concert in the Park scheduled for September 14 has been rescheduled to September 21st and will be held in Barr’s Park in Hamilton. Beat Retreat Ceremony scheduled for September 17th in King’s Square, Town of St. George has been rescheduled to September 27th. Bermuda National Gallery Lunchtime Lecture on September 17th is cancelled. Bermuda Equestrian Dressage Group Schooling Show on September 14th is cancelled. Bermuda Mixed Foursomes Championship scheduled for September 13 -14 is postponed. Bermuda Quilters Guild scheduled for September 18th is cancelled. SPCA Animal Expo & Fun Fair scheduled for September 20th is cancelled. All other events listed on our website in the Calendar of Events section for September are tentatively scheduled to occur. Visitors are encouraged to contact event organizers to confirm dates, times and locations. This information is subject to change. As a side note, Hurricane Isabel is not currently a factor for Bermuda at the moment.
